  • PDF

This tutorial is for anyone who has a Joomla website or any CMS website that uses a MySQL database. It assumes that you have access to phpMyAdmin in order to manage your database directly. If you are not sure then please contact your hosting company to find out.

Ok, lets get started,

Firstly you will need to open your web browser and enter the URL that will take you to your phpMyAdmin site. There you will need to enter your database username and password.

Select your database name in phpmyadmin

Once your credentials have been verified, you will be logged in and see your database name on the left hand side. If you have more than one database attached to your account then the others will be listed there too.

Click on the name of the joomla database that you would like to backup. Ours is called serotonin so we select it as seen in the image on the left.

Once you have clicked on your Joomla! database, you should come to a screen that looks like this:

Select the database export tab in phpmyadmin

This screen lists all the tables that are in your Joomla database. Click on the tab labelled "Export".This will  take you to another screen that looks like the one below:

Select the SQL export radio button in phpmyadmin

This is where the exporting /backup actually happens.

Following these simple steps will have your database exported to an SQL file.

1. Select all of your Joomla! tables from the list of tables. You can cliclk on the Select all button at the top.
2. In the list of export types, make sure "SQL" radio button is selected.
3. Leave your SQL options as they are unless you have a specific requirement or know exactly what you are doing.
4. Put a tick the "Save as file" checkbox on the bottom left by clicking on the checkbox..

Tick the save file as box phpmyadmin

Select the go button in phpmyadmin

5. Click on the button labelled "Go" which will be on the bottom right hand side of the screen. This will start the database export an prompt you wil a dialogue asking you where you would like to save the exported file. By default it will name the .sql file with the name of your database.

Make a note of where you save the file because it is a huge part of your website disaster recovery plan.

Backing up your site should be done regularly and before any major components are installed on your website.
